Better Indoor Air Quality Can Ease Spring Allergy Suffering

While it’s true that the fresh air of the great outdoors is usually cleaner than indoor air, this does not mean that the indoor environment of your home has to be unhealthy.  And that “fresh” outdoor air is the enemy of seasonal allergy sufferers, who must come inside for relief. It’s crucial that their indoor environment be as clean as possible.

Some things that you can do to improve your indoor air quality include the following:

  • Use a compact vapor cleaner (available at reasonable prices) to disinfect upholstery and floors.
  • When vacuuming, use a good machine that traps all particles and doesn’t redistribute poor air back into the room.
  • Empty the vacuum bag somewhere outdoors where dust won’t blow back into the home.
  • Wash bed linens frequently, and keep your pets off the bed as much as possible.
  • Shower before going to bed to remove invisible particles attached to your hair or clothing, before they enter your bedroom.
  • Use dehumidifiers to reduce moisture that can cause mildew and mold.
  • Clean or replace your furnace filters frequently, because the furnace blower will be circulating the same air throughout the home.
  • Get a high-quality air purifier.

Improving indoor air quality is a daily chore that should be performed in all seasons, but especially when all of those pretty flowers and trees are wreaking havoc with allergy sufferers.

The government has established ratings for the filters inside your home, making sure that your indoor air quality is healthy. The ratings are known as MERV, for Minimum Efficiency Reporting Value. A good contractor will be aware of these standards and advise you accordingly to optimize the indoor air quality for your family.
