Most homeowners understand that changing their air filters regularly is essential, without really knowing why. Some even underestimate the importance of changing air filters and wait longer then they should, thinking that it’s no big deal. But this can create some very negative consequences for your air conditioner, and your entire home.
Air filters do just what their name suggests — filter air and improve the air quality of your home by eliminating dust, dirt and other allergens that tend to accumulate. Without a clean filter, your air conditioner will just keep refiltering the same dusty air throughout the whole house, causing severe problems for people with asthma or allergies.
But regularly changing your air filters is also important to the overall performance of your air conditioner. If dust and dirt is allowed to accumulate across the surface of your air filters, airflow will be reduced. Your air conditioning system will have to work harder in order to provide the same kind of air circulation it did before, making your energy bill rise. The cost added to your energy bill from dirty air filters can be very significant.
In addition, dirty air filters can also cause the coils on the air conditioning unit to freeze up, rendering your unit unable to cool your home. Without proper airflow over the coils, cold air may linger over the coils too long, causing them to become too cold. If the temperature drops to below 32 degrees over the coils, then thick ice may develop and leave the rest of your home feeling anything but icy.
